Friday the 2nd of August

Friday is usually a quiet day since the pediatric oncology doctors don't come in. There was only one patient that Kythe was helping, and she is already 21. We arrived in the morning but left around 1 PM as she was quite tired and there wasn’t much to do. On days like these, Kythe often holds online playdates where kids who aren’t in the hospital can continue to benefit from Kythes support and join a call to spend some time doing activities or just talking.

Throughout the morning, we stayed in the treatment room with the patient but spent most of our time preparing for next week’s activities. Every month has a theme, and August is National Language Month in the Philippines. To celebrate, we planned activities related to languages, allowing the children to use the multiple languages they know.

Another activity Kythe enjoys is medical play, which uses medical supplies in a non-medical setting. This helps children not see medical supplies as just painful things. For this week’s medical play, we organized a treasure hunt with medical supplies transformed into objects like butterflies and clouds. The children will also have the opportunity to craft their own objects with the supplies.

After lunch, we left the hospital and headed to Moalboal, a beach town to the south of Cebu. On the way, we briefly stopped in Carcar, famous for a traditional Filipino dish called lechon, a roasted suckling pig. We tried a little piece and it was delicious. By the time we arrived in Moalboal, it was dark, so we had dinner and went to bed, ready to experience life in the Philippines outside the city.
